Emotional Intelligence, Leadership, and Communication Training and Coaching

Michelle Harcha, DVM, MA founded LeadYourShip, LLC to share her passion and knowledge of emotional intelligence, leadership, and communication skills with veterinary healthcare teams to help them learn techniques that provide the best work environment for their colleagues, and the most positive experience for their clients.

Michelle leads small groups through half-day or full-day workshops designed for their specific challenges to create opportunities for personal and professional growth. She provides assessment tools to help veterinary healthcare teams achieve a new level of personal awareness, which in turn enhances their ability to communicate with colleagues and clients. Professionals who complete her workshops demonstrate improved communication and emotional intelligence skills that offer a more positive work environment for all employees that translates to an exceptional client experience.

Her passion for communication training began with her entry into clinical veterinary practice at the beginning of her career. While working as an emergency veterinarian, she became certified in Everything DiSC® and witnessed the positive changes in her veterinary healthcare team using this remarkable assessment tool. In addition to clinical practice, her 35-year career in the veterinary profession included 12 years working for Hill's Pet Nutrition and 10 years leading and expanding the professional development curriculum and communications training for veterinary students at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, she participated and helped develop inter-professional education for the seven health sciences colleges at Ohio State.

Throughout her career, she has continued her education in communication, leadership training, and emotional intelligence through specialized workshops, certifications, and graduate study.

Solutions

  • Leadership - LeadYourShip®

How do you define leadership? Leaders create a shared vision for organizations that drive team members to engage in achieving success.

LeadYourShip! Leadership begins with you. You have to understand yourself well before you can lead others. Leadership includes understanding and managing self, developing social awareness and emotional intelligence, and handling conflict productively.

The success of any organization depends on the leadership skills of everyone on the team. One solution for creative leadership can be found in utilizing the Everything DiSC® Workplace® Profile. This assessment provides leaders with an understanding of their leadership style. In addition, it demonstrates how to adapt their leadership style to manage teams and communicate more effectively.

In addition, MyEverythingDiSC.com offers people access to insights about their DiSC® style and the styles of others. This includes comparison reports and strategies for applying DiSC® to real work situations.

  • Communication

Communication skills are an essential clinical and business skill set. They provide a foundation for an effective work environment with staff and colleagues, as well as a way to enhance the client experience.

In addition to utilizing the Everything DiSC® Workplace® Profile, we focus on eight core communication skills that help teams develop better relationships within their team and with their clients. The eight core skills include: 1) open-ended questions; 2) reflective listening; 3) empathy; 4) non-verbal communication; 5) pausing; 6) chunk and check; 7) sign posting, and 8) summary.

Using Everything DiSC ® in combination with the eight core communication skills can help your team learn to work more effectively with each other and enhance your clients' experience.

  • Emotional Intelligence

One of the most valuable frameworks to improve teamwork is through the domains of emotional intelligence identified by Daniel Goleman, PhD and Richard Boyatzis, PhD: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Goleman defines emotional intelligence as the capacity to recognize the impact our feelings have on ourselves and our reactions to people and situations. By learning to manage our emotions and our responses, we can tune into the feelings of those around us and create an atmosphere that invites open communication. Emotional intelligence is a set of skills and with practice and feedback, behaviors can be recognized and changed. The Everything DiSC® Workplace® Profile can enhance individuals’ understanding of themselves as well as offer a way to understand others. This leads to greater empathy in the workplace, as well as the development of skills to lead and manage teams.

  • Productive Conflict

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. How you handle it makes all the difference. The Everything DiSC® Productive Conflict profile helps people improve their self-awareness around conflict behaviors and provides techniques to curb destructive behaviors and effectively respond to conflict situations. The program features an exploration of DiSC® in a conflict context, provides an opportunity for participants to explore their destructive conflict responses, and offers them a method for making more productive choices in their response to conflict.

In a Productive Conflict workshop, participants learn their own DiSC style and how to interact in conflict with people with different DiSC styles. They will explore common destructive responses to conflict and why they and others might react this way. In addition, participants practice stepping back from and reframing their unhealthy thought patterns, allowing them to choose more productive responses to conflict.
